Aviation Elite Team

Aerospace Elite Team brings STEM education to new heights through designing experiments and holding flight simulation workshops. Students are engaged to apply interdisciplinary knowledge physics, geography and language to solve aeronautical problems with visual and instrument flight rules. Through the provided training, students can acquire a better understanding of the complexity of problems of interest and the associated inquiries of solving them.

Vision

The Aerospace Elite Team (The Team) was founded in 2017 in Po Leung Kuk Laws Foundation College. In line with the global trend of promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), we plan to introduce our students to the exciting and challenging task of controlling an airplane. It is not as easy as it looks in movies or video games. A vast amount of knowledge is required just to keep an aircraft at a stable altitude, let alone go in desired directions.
The Team aims to give students a taste of flying, with basic training on the required knowledge.

USE OF PORTABLE DEVICES

Thanks to the advancement in technology, the experience of flight simulation can now be brought to students through portable devices. This was not possible in the past as hardware was both costly and bulky. Now we can simulate flying using tablets or laptops, and all members in the team can practise simultaneously. Thus, users can learn real aerodynamics through realistic graphics anytime and anywhere. Upon reaching certain milestones, they will be given the chance to fly using more realistic simulation equipment.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

We are building and refining a School-Based Curriculum in the hope of getting students to learn some of the aforementioned knowledge. We believe it is in the students’ best interest if they can learn through hands-on experience. This way, they can learn more advanced topics without having to wait until they get to senior forms when these topics are taught. Also, we believe Experiential Learning (acquiring knowledge through experience) is a key in acquiring practical knowledge for our learners.

PLANT THE SEEDS

We plant the seeds of science and technology through subject discipline from sparking students‘ curiosity to sustained inquiry. Under the aerospace curriculum, we drive from individual aeronautical knowledge to multidiscipline subjects collaboration.

Students can get insights into different areas:

•Aviation History

•Airmanship

•Aviation Engineering

•Principle of Flight

•Air Traffic Control

We will organize workshops to let students build their own planes (Plane models, Flight instruments, etc) as well as Pilot Sharing Sessions to allow our students to learn about the Aviation Industry in Hong Kong. We are also making plans to partner with the Hong Kong Air Cadet Corps (HKACC) to give students more exposures to Civil Aviation in Hong Kong, the Government Flying Service and Air Traffic Control.

We also plan to adopt a Self-Directed Learning approach to maximize our learning outcomes. We are incorporating various learning tasks (other than just flying) so as to give students better exposure to actual airplane designs. And we believe that arousing students’ interest is the best way to get students motivated. An enthusiast who spends hours researching into a subject often knows more than actual practitioner in the field. And we will incorporate small learning tasks with increasing degree of difficulty, fostering students’ interest through the positive experience of accomplishing even the hardest jobs.
